Das Programm Free ermittelt den Speicherplatz von Datenträger wie Disketten Laufwerken, Wechselmedien, lokalen Festplatten sowie Netz und CD-Rom Laufwerken mit den gebräuchlichen Formaten wie FAT, VFAT, NTFS , CDFS, etc. Außerdem lässt sich der Verschnitt ermitteln, der durch nur teilweise gefüllte Cluster bei großen Festplattenpartitionen mit dem Format FAT entsteht. Wobei der Verschnitt bei großen Partitionen,der Formate VFAT und NTFS auch nicht unerheblich ist. Die Ermittlung des Verschnitts ist auch für einzelnen Verzeichnissen möglich. Die Speicherplatz Informationen werden wahlweise als Balkendiagram oder Text dargestellt.
